Sixteen tons - of fish! You may have heard the old song by Tennessee Ernie Ford, "16 Tons." Well, by early April, that's how many catfish and sunfish will have made their way into Community Fishing waters. We stocked the first catfish of the season March 19, and more recently, we stocked all the "core" waters with bluegill sunfish. PHOENIX – One thousand youth hunt/fish licenses will be given away free of charge at the "Bonsall Park 1,000 Youth License Giveaway," on Saturday, April 25 in Glendale. The giveaway coincides with a free fishing clinic -- loaner rods will be available, no license is required, and bait will be provided. Tip Of The Week Alamo Lake has possibly the best crappie fishing in the state right now. Bartlett is also noteworthy. Mark Knapp from Alamo Lake State Park said these "specks" are fishing up by the north end of the buoy line. Anglers are using a road runner with a white jig head and minnow trailer. The fish are in approximately 25 to 30 feet of water. Our last trout stocking for central and southern waters this season will take place on the week of March 2-7. Catfish stockings will resume after that during the week of March 16-21. Trout will continue to be stocked into Green Valley Lakes in Payson until early May. Friendship Park agreement finalized! The Department finalized an intergovernment agreement with City of Avondale to add Friendship Park Pond. We'll be working with the city to initiate stockings into Friendship Park pond very soon.... This year will mark the 17th annual BILL LUKE BASS DAYS event with significant changes being made in the event format. The event is focused on the family values of fishing and other outdoor activities. Not unlike other years the event still focuses on a 3-day fishing tournament, however, other venue events for family values entertainment and fun are scheduled. Tip Of The Week At Apache Lake, anglers have been catching a high number of largemouth bass in the 1-2-pound range on Lucky Craft rip baits. The Reel Deal Some reported hot spots have been Bartlett Lake for largemouth bass, Lake Pleasant for flathead catfish, and Kinnikinick Lake for brown and rainbow trout. Kudos to Rich Griner of Queen Creek, who caught this 26-inch, 8.6-pound rainbow trout from Canyon Creek on a worm in mid-November. Griner said his fish was caught upstream of the hatchery... Even native Arizonans tend to overlook the southern bass lakes when they get the urge to bass fish. The biggest lakes are in the central part of the state and along the Colorado River, and those areas are also quicker and easier to get to for a majority of the population. This colossal catfish was caught by Italian angler Dino Ferrari from the River Po Northern Italy. It measured an incredible 8.6 feet (259cm) and weighed a staggering 260 pounds, making it one of the largest catfish ever landed in Europe. Dino, who fishes for German tackle firm Team Sportex, has plenty of experience of fishing the Po, having landed numerous other cats over 200 pounds from the waterway. Tip Of The Week Fishing for largemouth bass is excellent at Bartlett Lake. Crankbaits are hot, and here's a tried-and-true bass-snatcher: the Rapala Shad Rap. Get a 3-inch version. Then tie it to 8-pound test line, fish islands, points and rocky shorelines, and if conditions are favorable, anglers could have a good shot at some bass strikes. Have fun! The Community Fishing Program resumed stocking catfish in the core waters in mid-September. Two trucks serviced the Phoenix and Tucson areas from two separate ponds in Arkansas. Unfortunately, one of those ponds had weaker-than-normal fish, and following the stocking, we had reports of mortalities from almost all of the Phoenix-area waters at various levels. Lake levels at the Salt River chain lakes did not rise as much as some anglers might expect, but there was enough rain to cool the water temperatures. Early one Saturday morning, a call came stating a big striper had just been caught at the mouth of Warm Creek. It took about 20 minutes to get there but we soon found a boat at the corner of Warm Creek and the main channel. Adam Jones and Deborah Williams were right there and when we got in range, Adam held up a huge striper. We got out of the wind and headed to shore where we could get the full story. http://www.wayneswords.com Lake Powell has topped out at 3609 MSL after rising 35 feet this year. That means Castle Rock Cut is 27 feet deep and should remain passable for the rest of 2014. Fish are more concerned about habitat. New green brush went under water at 3603 and will provide bass habitat and shad shelter for much of the summer. The shad crop is a bit above average. Lynx Lake One of our favorite little hikes in the pines is the easy trail #311 that circles Lynx Lake. Most of this trail is shaded by trees, and the lake and the forest around it are gorgeous. We often see a huge variety of birds and small mammals, even in the summer. At the end of April, eleven of the Community Fishing Programs expansion waters were stocked with catfish. Ponds stocked include Bonsall (Glendale), Discovery and McQueen (Gilbert), Pacana (Maricopa), four Yuma waters (Redondo Lake, Fortuna Lake, West Wetland Pond, and Council Ave. Pond), Roadrunner and Granada (Phoenix), and Eldorado (Scottsdale).
