Grand Canyon, Ariz. – National Park Service (NPS) fire managers anticipate initiating prescribed fire treatment for the Shoshone Rx during the week of April 27 as weather and fuel moisture conditions allow. The Shoshone Point Rx is within the developed area on the South Rim, is 1,035 acres in size and comprised primarily of pinon juniper and ponderosa pine. Grand Canyon, Ariz. – National Park Service (NPS) fire managers have postponed ignition of the Shoshone Prescribed Fire Unit due to precipitation over the project area. Plans for each burn unit contain a set of parameters which define the desired weather and fuel conditions under which a prescribed fire can be initiated. As the recent rainfall has moved the unit out of prescription for implementation, the project has been postponed until it is back in prescription. May 8, 2015 Grand Canyon, Ariz. – Crews finished repairing a break in the Transcanyon Pipeline (TCP) that occurred north of Phantom Ranch late Monday, May 4th. Phantom Ranch is no longer in water conservation mode and drinking water is again available at Cottonwood Campground, Roaring Springs, and Supai Tunnel on the North Kaibab Trail. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area staff continue to monitor park waters to determine the distribution of quagga mussels. Quagga mussels were recently identified in sampling locations between Glen Canyon Dam and Lees Ferry. Mussel larvae (veligers) are passing through the Glen Canyon Dam and low numbers of adult mussels have been confirmed in the Glen Canyon stretch of the river.
