Editor's Note: Although there are many ways to help and honor our veterans, here is a summary (in no particular order) of some. Even though there are some ratings -- by letter -- below, this publication does not recommend any one above another; that is for individuals to decide. Some Top Choices Among Veterans Charities Armed Services YMCA of the USA (A) Who We Are: The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) is the constant in a military family’s life: on the home front and during deployment, when t... You - the people, the citizens, the patriots, the Americans - all are the wind beneath our country's wings. With your loyalty and support, our eagle flies free, unencumbered by a divided citizenry, destructive politics, and weak leadership. It is up to you: Be a strong wind beneath our country's eagle or let it falter and fall. This Memorial Day we salute those who did not let the eagle fall: our veterans. Be Heard! These are five ways to get help when you need it. Lake Powell, Lake Mead Rising... Full story
This pontoon boat at Lake Pleasant displays a great combination: freedom to enjoy the outdoors and our waterways in particular. In the middle of June we celebrated Flag Day (June 14) and the birth of the U.S. Army (June 14, 1775). This month, of course, is Independence Day on July 4. All these are reminders of the good fortune we have to live in this country -- even with its flaws and shortcomings. The United States of America offers us opportunities to accomplish all we can be, and she needs... Full story
This is worth celebrating: The Arizona Game & Fish Department's Outdoor Expo is back! After a two-year hiatus, the popular family friendly event returns. I am taking this as a sign that our past couple of years of restricted activities are finally coming to an end. I hope I am right and that we will be able to cheer on "normal", be it the new or otherwise. The Expo, in a sense, kicks off the spring season in the Southwest, and as you will note in this issue, the focus is on such great outdoor... Full story

As Margie Anderson says in her article "Walks with Water" in "Land Cruising", " Summer is tough when you live in the Valley. However, if you're up for a casual stroll and you go very early or very late in the day, there are some great places in and around Phoenix where you can take a pretty flat walk and be near water the whole time." Her photo of Arizona Falls on this month's cover is just one example of that refreshing idea. It is a wonderful 20-foot waterfall on the canal right in town (56th... Full story
As much as we all enjoy the Southwest and much of the year in Arizona, we do have to endure the soaring temperatures of summer for a few months. There are out-of-state "escape routes" such as San Diego, of course, but some of us choose to cool off in Arizona's high country instead. Places such as Flagstaff, Payson, Show Low, and Prescott are four examples of cooler places to visit at this time of year. The ultimate outdoors woman, Margie Anderson, suggests two hikes that offer a respite from the... Full story

It's hard to believe, but yes, there is a lake and there are boats right in the middle of Tempe, Ariz. My husband and I were residents of this beautiful area, The Lakes, for four years and enjoyed every minute of our time there. Now, years later, we love returning to The Lakes with a special destination in mind: The Watershed restaurant. It is one of our favorites. Being lakeside, it is also a cool alternative for escaping the summer heat. Besides this great feature, you can enjoy modern... Full story

Today, the 2017 versions of recreational vehicles, camping and diving equipment are a far cry from these early versions. We have progressed to the stage of "near-luxury" in all of these products for enjoying the outdoors. But, are we having more fun? We may be safer, faster, and better looking, but my guess is that that the folks shown in these photos were loving the chances they had to be with nature - maybe even more so because less was done for them (think electronically) and they had more... Having lived in Canada for over two decades, I like to add its early July holiday (Canada Day, July 1) to the celebrations I enjoy for my native land on Independence Day, July 4. If one were to fill a "bucket list" with all the Watersports he or she would like to try, it would no doubt overflow. Have you ever stopped to consider how many ways - besides traditional boating, waterskiing, wakeboarding, fishing, and swimming - there are to enjoy the water. Starting just with categories, we have "in the water (e.g., snorkeling and water polo), "on the water (e.g., cable skiing, body boarding)", "under water (e.g., diving and spear fishing)", to name just a few. That list... Full story
