For a little while longer, Lake Powell's water level is stable and temperature remains in the low 60s, which is ideal for excellent bass, walleye and crappie fishing. With day length and ambient temperature increasing, the best tip is to fish in the shade. That includes the shady side of an individual rock or the shady side of a canyon. Seek shade to increase catch. Bass Spawning Near Completion Bass nests are still seen in the clear water and some have male guards cruising in the vicinity.... Full story
It seems that this Bartlett Lake largemouth bass bit off more than he could chew. As Don McDowell of Shake, Rattle, and Troll Radio explained when asked if either or both of the fish could survive: "Only if someone removes the smaller fish. What happens is the dorsal fins on the smaller fish won't allow the larger fish to release the small fish. The smaller fish basically is stuck and without intervention, both are doomed."... Full story
Hey, with temperatures in the deserts expected to soar into the triple digits, it might be time for a cool dose of scented pine air. Especially since we are getting great fishing reports from most of the mountain lakes. Woods Canyon Lake Big Lake and Woods Canyon Lake are both hot spots right now. Both of those waters have stores and boat rentals, making them even more attractive. I have been getting lots of reports of anglers catching limits of trout — even some larger holdover ones. Ironically... Full story

I have heard many a boater say, “I don't need a lifejacket. I am a good swimmer.” I am too. And I used to think the same thing. I thought I didn't need a life jacket unless it was rough water and I could not see land. I was confident I could easily swim to shore in the tiny Arizona lakes. At least I felt that way until I finished an Ironman swim. I competed in a 2.4-mile swim at Tempe Town Lake, finishing with a respectable time. Got to the ramp, put my feet under me to jog the 10 feet to the... Full story
As the warm weather is upon us, we are all thinking about dusting off the boat and going to have some fun on the lake! As most of us do not boat much in the wintertime, we need to ensure that our boats are properly maintained and that we have not forgotten about the safety equipment we must carry. Remember: When you are out on the water help is not necessarily close by! Since we may not have been boating for several months, too many of the skills required are not engrained into our normal... We’re only days away from Desert Storm 2012: April 23-28. After Desert Storm 2011, ideas of incorporating the Lake Havasu Boat Show into the same timeframe as Desert Storm were popping up as a way to keep growing the Lake Havasu boat show. For boating manufacturers and vendors, who normally wouldn’t display in a West Coast event, but do attend Desert Storm, it would be a great incentive to attend both and get more exposure than ever before. Plus it really puts the Desert Storm Performance Boa... Full story

Temperatures are warming up, and that means more people will be taking to Arizona’s waterways for boating fun in the sun. While a day on the water offers relaxation and recreation, safe-boating practices are key to enjoying your outing. The most important thing to do when on the water is to be “situationally aware,” said Kevin Bergersen, state boating law administrator with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. That means know what is going on around you, and that conditions on the water can c...

Fishing is fantastic as long as you are fishing for bass in the afternoon. Bass spawning is imminent. It may take a little while longer due to unsettled weather, but fishing will remain very good for bass for the rest of the month. Water temperature still declines into the mid 50s overnight, but by afternoon, water in the backs of the canyons and coves warms to the mid 60s. This warming and cooling cycle produces the best bass fishing of the year. Sight Fishing Sight fishing for very big bass... Full story

They hope to have a large flotilla invasion of "Zonies" on Catalina. For the first time in decades, the two clubs will do a sail together, so many are excited by this co-cruise. John Pendleton is... Just recently, we just stocked a bonus 3,000 rainbow trout into the Lower Salt River below Saguaro Lake near Phoenix at the Waters Users (where the tubers put in) and Blue Point Bridge. Despite our late winter temperatures soaring up just as spring approaches, the water in the Lower Salt comes from the bottom of Saguaro Lake, so it is in the low 50s, making it a superb riverine trout fishery in the Upper Sonoran Desert. Basically, it's a one-of-a-kind fishery. So, give it a try. Be sure to get y...
Lake Powell water temperature still hovers between 49 and 54. Not much change will occur in fishing conditions until significant warming of air and water comes toward the end of March. The good news is that stripers, walleye, largemouth and crappie can be caught now with specific effort directed in the small areas of vulnerability these species exhibit. Here is the pattern for success. Look for water that is murky green instead of blue and clear. Most fish are holding in the back of canyons... Full story
For birdwatchers everywhere, the sharp weeep call of a Nutting's Flycatcher makes the heart skip a beat, especially for so-called "listers" who try to see as many of the world's 10,000 species as they can in one year. News that a Nutting's was spotted early in 2012 near Lake Havasu City in the Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge has spread worldwide. Since then, flocks of birders descended upon this Colorado River... Full story
Although the national mainstream media continues to bemoan a frustratingly slow economic recovery, exhibitors at the 21st Annual Lake Havasu Boat Show, April 20-22, are certainly doing their part to break out of the slump. “We’re still a little over two months away from opening the boat show, and we’re very close to running out of available exhibit space,” commented show organizer Bob Brown. “It appears that the boating industry is tired of waiting for Washington to declare the recession...
