Voyages Of San Salvador – Cabrillo's Journey

National Park Services film, Voyages of the San Salvador – Cabrillo's Journey follows the 1542 expedition led by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on a journey to find a route to China to trade for valuable spices. This expedition marked the first European landing on what is now the west coast of the United States.

Filmed on the Maritime Museum of San Diego's replica of San Salvador, and with the use of interviews, the movie allows viewers to experience what life was like during the Age of Exploration. While Cabrillo's expedition never found a route to China, Cabrillo and San Salvador play a significant role in California history.

First Contact – The Voyage Of Cabrillo

This tale is actually two parallel stories. One is the voyage of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo – a Portuguese conquistador sailing for the Spanish – who was looking for China but instead "discovered" Alta California and the Channel Islands. And that was 89 years before the Pilgrims got to Plymouth Rock, meaning that America really started here.

His story is intercut with the San Diego Maritime Museum's ambitious, years in the making, and ultimately successful effort to build a replica of Cabrillo's flagship San Salvador.
