Pleasant Harbor and Evofit, will be hosting the 1st Annual Pleasant Harbor Dam Cancer! 5K Run/Walk at Lake Pleasant on Saturday, Oct. 13. The race will take place on the New Waddell Dam which is 4,700 feet long and 440 feet high. Construction of the current Lake Pleasant Dam, begun in 1984, was completed in 1994. Never open to the public, runners will have a unique vantage point running high above the lake's surface.

Tickets for the Dam Cancer! 5K Run/Walk are $46.00 and available online at http://www.evofit.net. Children, 10 years and younger, are free with parent supervision. Registration for the event begins at 8:00 a.m. and the entry fee includes a T-shirt, snacks, timed run and access to activities on the Pleasant Harbor event lawn after the race, including a DJ, vintage car show and food trucks. The event ends at 1:00 p.m.

Proceeds Help Patients

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Wigged Out, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help return a sense of self and confidence to individuals who are afflicted by medically related hair loss. The organization has provided more than 500 wigs to people in need.

"The New Waddell Dam is always closed to the general public, which makes this a very special opportunity," said Deneen Ramirez, Pleasant Harbor Events manager. "The views will be spectacular."

Getting There

When traveling from Phoenix, Pleasant Harbor is the first entrance to the lake, on the Southeastern shores. If you have reached the County entrance, you have gone too far. From the Phoenix area, Pleasant Harbor is conveniently located off Carefree Highway and 87th Avenue at 8708 W. Harbor Boulevard, Peoria, AZ 85383.

Visitors exiting I-17, travel west on Carefree Highway, or take North 99th Avenue/North Lake Pleasant Parkway from Bell Road to Carefree Highway and then west to 87th Avenue and then onto Harbor Boulevard.

Pleasant Harbor gate admission fee is $6.00 per vehicle; however, gate fees are waived for runners and walkers of the Dam Cancer! event who show registration confirmation at the gate.

New Waddell Dam Circa 1980s

MWD, owner and operator of Pleasant Harbor RV Resort and Marina - sitting on 225 acres of pristine desert along the southeastern banks of Lake Pleasant - was formally organized in 1925, as Maricopa County Municipal Water Conservation District Number One (MWD).

Maricopa Water District controls more than 150,000 acre feet of water storage at Lake Pleasant, managing more than 100 miles of lateral pipelines, while providing water to a 60 square mile service area, including citrus trees, flowers, vegetables, farms and golf courses.
