Times Spent Outdoors: Priceless!
The ‘great outdoors’ is right in the Phoenix area.
Winter in Phoenix is a beautiful thing! There is so much going on: great events every weekend, the sun shines (almost) every day, and the temperature is just right. It is an ideal time to get out in the parks to explore the Sonoran Desert.
Phoenix has some of the most parkland per person within city limits in the United States, and mountain preserves and public land surround the metro area. Here are three great options for getting outdoors in the Phoenix area.
• Phoenix Mountain Parks and Preserves — Within Phoenix, mountain oases rise above the surrounding city and provide ample opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. North Mountain Visitor Center is a great place to learn about the surrounding Sonoran Desert and to plan a hike. Info at https://phoenix.gov/parks/trails/locations/north-mountain/visitor-center
• Maricopa County Regional Parks — Bordering the metro area in every direction are mountain regional parks offering challenging trails and spectacular views. There are four nature centers that provide an introduction to the plants, animals, and ecology of the parks. Info at
http://maricopa.gov/parks/naturecenters.aspx
• Arizona State Parks — Just outside of the metro area is a land of parks, forests and wilderness. Lost Dutchman State Park sits on the foothill of the Superstition Mountains, providing a basecamp to explore the surrounding mountains. Info at http://azstateparks.com/Parks/LODU
• The National Park Service (NPS) is celebrating 100 years. In collaboration, Arizona State Parks is encouraging you to "Find Your Park" in Arizona.
