The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water provides local non-profit groups up to $10,000 to help educate boaters on safe and clean boating topics. However, it needs your help to determine who will get the money.
With its 2015 Grassroots Grants program kicking off, the national 501(c)(3) is looking to the public to help it decide which of the eight submitted projects will receive funding in the competitive program. Boaters have until midnight on March 24 to go to http://www.BoatUS.org/grants/vote.asp to cast their vote, and may vote for their favorite project once a day until voting closes. Grants will be awarded in April.
Grant funds come from donations by the over half-million members of Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). Since 1989, the Foundation has awarded more than $1.3 million to organizations that have developed creative projects to promote safe and clean boating on their local waterways. The Grassroots Grants contenders are -
Alaska - Cook Inletkeeper of Homer: Grant funds would be used for the Alaska Clean Boating Incentive Program offering discounts for boaters at local businesses.
Arizona - Newspapers Foundation of Yuma: Funding would be used to make an educational publication, Wally's Wonderful World of Boating, more accessible to schools and at boat ramps and local outdoor stores.
Maryland - Chesapeake Conservancy of Annapolis: Grant funds will be used to create a mobile Chesapeake Boaters Guide with boating safety and clean water tips.

Minnesota - Kandiyohi County AIS Task Force of Willmar: Funds would be used to create an aquatic-invasive-species education and prevention app for smartphones that includes boat-cleaning information and invasive-species ID tips.
New Jersey - Lake Hopatcong Foundation: Funds would pay for Lake Hopatcong Guide Map with information on invasive species and pump-out station locations.
New York - The Lake George Association: Grant funds will be used for the multi-prong Lake George Invasive Species Education & Outreach program to teach boaters how to inspect their boat for invasive species and offer a video showing boaters what to expect when they arrive at an inspection station.
Tennessee - Keep Tennessee Beautiful of Memphis: Grant funds would address anti-litter educational outreach to boaters, and include public service announcements and outreach events.
Washington - Northwest Maritime Center of Port Townsend: Grant funds would create a series of educational videos and simlulator for the "Read Your Radar Right, Reduce Collisions" project.
