Arizona Anglers Are Invited

Yellowtail Derby Is Coming Soon

April 15, 2014

Winter, about to be spring, fishing has already produced yellowtail in the Coronado Islands. Home guard yellowtail, white seabass and California halibut are here year around. Who will catch the largest yellowtail and have his or her name engraved on the perpetual trophy for this year’s Yellowtail Derby, May 4-June 7.

The anglers asked for changes.

One, make the contest strictly for only recreational anglers; guides or commercial anglers will not be allowed to enter.

Two, there is a change in the fish mix; halibut has replaced albacore, which is a more consistent local game fish. Yellowtail will be the featured fish, but the event will include white seabass and halibut divisions.

The winner of the 2013 Tournament was Marc Nunes of Point Loma, San Diego, Calif. He successfully landed a 35-pound yellowtail in the La Jolla kelp on June 3 on his boat. Neil Barbour was the winner of the white seabass division with a 62-pound, 8-ounce fish off Point Loma.
