World Waterski Racing Championships
To Create Dramatic160kmh Spectacle In Canary Islands

Waterski Racing is one of the most spectacular extreme sports ever created! For the third time, Spain will host the World Waterski Racing Championships following Spain’s highly successful events in 1985 and 1999. The location will be Puerto Colon at the coastal town of Adeje in the south of Tenerife where the very popular Racing tradition dates back to the 1970s.
To describe Waterski Racing as an Extreme Sport is an understatement. It demands enormous skill, concentration, stamina, team focus and most of all, a great deal of courage. Simply put, a Waterski Race Team consists of a Boat Driver, an Observer and a Skier. The Skier’s typical Race Ski is over two meters long and speeds close to 160kmh are reached in the Course. Using special signals, the Driver, Observer and Skier make constant adjustments to maximize their joint performance. As in F1 Motor Racing, generally, the first team home wins. Racing Classes involved in these World Championships will include Open Men, Open Women, F2 Men, F2 Women, Junior Girl and Junior Boy.
At this time, 45 boats are lined up for the 2013 World Championships in Tenerife, plus 46 Drivers and 53 Observers. The countries involved will include Australia with 9 boats, Austria with 2, Belgium with 11, Great Britain also with 11, New Zealand with just 1, USA with 3, and Spain with 8. What a spectacle this will be!
Italy, Holland, USA and Canada are popular venues for this sport throughout the year but Australia is where it reaches extraordinary heights. Their famous “Southern 80” Race often sees over 1,000 athletes competing in that annual event. Enormous crowds are also expected to attend these 2013 World Championships in Tenerife.
Recently, Chris Stout (AUS), three-time World Racing Champion, was named Athlete of the Year by the IWWF and was the first Racer ever to receive this title. He also took the 2011 World Racing Championships F1 Title. With many new faces in the Skier lineup next week, the World Champion titles are more open than usual. Skiers to watch out for this time will include Kathrin Ortlieb (AUT), who took the Bronze Open Women title in 2011, Trudi Stout (AUS) and Tania Teelow (AUS). The men to watch will include Mark Weaver (AUS), who captured the Silver Medal in F2 in 2011, Steven Van Gaeveren (BEL) and Todd Haig (USA).
