Safe-Boating: Let's Keep It Underway This Season

The 2013 version of Safe Boating Week has been a big success.

The start of the Safe Boating Week events is one of our favorite activities of the year. Several Squadron members — including ourselves — cut short out-of-town vacations to make it back for this event.

We inspect boats for basic boating-safety requirements and this gives us a chance to meet people and provide additional information on watercraft safety. Although many boaters are experienced, there are those who do not know what they should about their own boats or what to do in the water if they have a problem.

This gives us a chance to explain what the various “gadgets” on a boat are and how to use them. We explain the rules as well as give practical guidelines. We also ask the people we meet at these safe-boating events if they would like to take a class. Many do, even signing up the whole family.

SAFETY FIRST -- Ron Werner is one of the U.S. Power Squadron members who place great importance on Boating Safety Week and, as shown here, participate in the kickoff events. The Prescott boater shown with Werner has been honored as that city's firefighter of the year; he is currently captain of Prescott's paramedics and operates the fire department on Whisky Row. His son Jimmy (smiling and at the helm) was celebrating his 24th birthday this day.
